  • Independence Plaza (Plaza Grande) including the Cathedral of Quito, the Government's Palace, the President's Palace and the Archbishop's Palace

  • La Mitad del Mundo - equator marker (Middle of the World) located 15 miles north of Quito.  Walk 10 minutes from the monuments to the actual marker where you can pay $3 for the Museo Solar Inti Nan museum experience, which is a highlight of the trip.  Museum experiments include balancing an egg on a nail and watching water go down a drain without any spin.  The caldera nearby is impressive too.  You can cab to La Mitad for about $15US one way or take a local bus for less than $1.
  • Panecillo Mirador for views of colonial and modern Quito, plus the Pichincha volcano
  • San Juan Mirador for views over colonial Quito
  • Teleférico - gondola ride from the city center to Cruz Loma on the east side of Pichincha volcano
  • Educadorian Folkloric Ballet
  • day trip 50 miles to the rainforest, visiting the Mindo Rainforest (Mindo-Nambillo Protected Forest), Tandayapa Hummingbird Sanctuary (Cloud Forest) and/or Maquipucuna Cloud Forest Reserve
  • day trip to Cotopaxi National Park; catch a view of Mount Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano on Earth.  For less than $100US you can take a cab 1.5 hours each way and they will wait for you while you hike to the refugio or glacier.
